How to make a tote bag mockup

Totes are one of the easiest merch items to sell and one of the easiest to mock up badly. A flat bag with a logo pasted on it says nothing. Here is how to make a tote mockup that shows scale, canvas texture and how the bag is actually carried.

Two ways to print a tote

In Drapeshot a tote bag has two print areas. Pick the one that matches what your printer offers.

Make a tote mockup, step by step

  1. Open the scene wall and filter by Tote bag. Drawstring bags have their own filter and the same two options, with a 10 x 12 in front.
  2. Drop your design in. It is scaled to fit and centred on the panel.
  3. Pick a colour. Natural is the undyed canvas look most totes come in, and black, navy and a colour picker cover the rest.
  4. Open a scene and choose Front or All over. For a front print, drag the design or use the size and position sliders. For all over, set the pattern size and spacing under Advanced.
  5. Download the mockup, and the print file if you need it.

Getting the scale right

The front area is 11 inches wide, which is a normal maximum for a standard canvas tote. A design at 100 percent fills that width or height, whichever it hits first. For a quieter, more boutique look, print smaller and leave canvas around the design. Slide the size down and look at it on a carried shot, not just a flat one.

Watch the bottom of the bag. Totes sag when they are carried, so a design that sits low can end up in the fold. Moving it up an inch often reads better.

Inks that suit canvas

  • Natural canvas is not white. Pale yellows and creams disappear on it, so check the design on natural before you order.
  • A single ink look like Stencil or Line art matches how most canvas totes are screen printed, and you can set the ink colour to exactly what your printer stocks.
  • Two colour and Riso look good on natural canvas and give a handmade feel that fits markets and bookshops.
  • Original keeps your design in full colour, which is what you want for DTF or sublimation totes.

Use the scene that tells the story

A tote over a shoulder on a street or at a cafe table sells the use. A product only shot on a plain background makes the design easy to read. Use the person filter on the wall to switch between the two, and the setting filter to find studio, out and about, at home or festive scenes.

For a shop listing, put the clear product shot first and the carried shot second. See mockups for Etsy and Shopify for how to build a full set.

Questions people ask

Can I do an all over print tote mockup?

Yes. Pick All over and your design repeats across the whole bag in a half drop pattern. The all over print guide covers pattern size and spacing.

Can I match the colour of my tote blank?

Yes. Pick natural for undyed canvas, choose another preset or type your blank's colour into the colour picker.

Is it free?

Yes, every scene and colour is free to use, and free downloads carry a watermark. Pro gives clean, bigger files and batch downloads.
